The amp we tested against the original 1969 super lead Marshall was the reissue (I think we bought it in late 2006) of the “very same amp” (yeah right…) by Marshall called 1959HW and yes it is handwired (although if you open up both amps & examine them in scrutiny you will notice that the reissue has inferior parts & wiring, thank god they used the proper Dagnall designed transformer…)…
If you remember (I’d be surprised if you did after all of these amps…
) we used the heads side by side through the same cabinet (through Jurgen’s cabinet switcher) but the cabinet was the reissue not the original.As you can remember the reissue is ,compared to the original,a great amp for....a doorstop!
As for tubes you know me I don’t use the junk new tubes at any of my amps!(how dare you insult me ?? J ) Both amps had brown bottomed Mullard 6CA7/EL34's which are the bees knees for any Marshall (actually both amps will soon be retubed with 70’s “communist” Siemens EL34/6CA7 “dimple tops” cause I am running out of the Dutch made metal based Mullards & I want to save them for the future,actually for the “dimple tops” are better for extremely loud playing & were the stock Marshall tubes during the 70s ) and Brimar CV4004/12AX7s (actually I prefer the Mullard 12ax7’s but I save them for the JTM’s which are my favorite Marshalls )
Why do you ask? I thought you hated Marshalls !! Maybe you saw the light and decided to play a bit of rock n’rolla Ayatolah?? J
If you want a Marshall I think that the small vintage 20watt PA heads (you can still get them at reasonable prices at ebay, I have 5 but I don’t think I will sell them in the near future ,if I do I’ll let you know) might be better for you .I can also convince Jurgen to find some time and build you one at cost price….you know Jurgen the promise of a few free ouzos in Ia will surely convince him : )
JTM 45/100’s ???? Well I do have 3 extremely rare JTM 45/100’s,one 66 lead & two 67 bass, but these are so expensive that are kept in the “vault”,you should see the SIZE of their transformers man!They look exactly like the JTM45’s I had at home but are 4 times louder and KILL tubes in a fly (these transformers are merciless …),you would like them since they have the best clean sound of any Marshall ever made (and actually have a Fender Bassman tonestack…) the reissue of this amp is really good (down to the Laydown Transformers and with good tubes it sounds a lot like the original but a bit tigher…) but I think Marshall made 200 or so copies only…..of course you NEED alnico speakers to really enjoy this amp (my fave combo is the JTM 45/100 with an old Orange cabinet loaded w/ 100w alnico Fanes,a match made in heaven my friend!)
