Born in Folegandros, in the Cyclades, he lived all his years in Istanbul. Although he did not speak any Turkish, his best client was the Sultan's Palace. He made ouds, lutes, sazis and even today he is so well known for his ouds that some people compare them to Stradivari's violins. At some point his nephew, Victor Dekavalas, went to his workshop as a paramour and learned the art with him. Victor even kept Venio's workshop after his death, together with another of his uncle's agents Mustafa. In 1922 he arrived in Greece on a foreign passport, hunted by the Turks for illegally distributing Greek press in Istanbul. He brought with him what he could take from his workshop, tools, moulds and after a short wander in Greece he settled in Thessaloniki. In 1923 he started in Rotonda, very close to where the workshop of Victor Dekavala is still located today. Kostas, son of Victor, was born in 1924. From the age of 14 years he occasionally helped Victor the master in the workshop, but it was only in '49, after the occupation and the civil war, that he began to deal with instrument making. Until 1961, when his father died, they worked together. From 1961 onwards the workshop changed course. Kostas Dekavalas stopped giving instruments to other shops and started to manufacture professional instruments, exclusively meeting his own needs.
