Ένα από το πιο ελεύθερα και δημιουργικά κεφάλαια της jazz, παρουσιάζεται στο Half Note Jazz Club. Ο Αμερικανός master περκασιονίστας, πολυοργανίστας και συνθέτης Kahil El’Zabar και η καταπληκτική μπάντα του γιορτάζοντας περισσότερα από 50 χρόνια πρωτοποριακής δημιουργίας, έρχονται για τέσσερα μαγικά βράδια από 18 έως και 21 Οκτωβρίου, στην τζαζ σκηνή της πόλης.
Ο κορυφαίος καλλιτέχνης που έντυσε με τα κρουστά του, μπάντες όπως του Stevie Wonder, του Paul Simon, της Nina Simone και υπήρξε πολύτιμος συνεργάτης του Dizzy Gillespie, του Cannonball Adderley, του Pharoah Sanders, του David Murray, θα μας ταξιδέψει με τον τρόπο και την μοναδική του προσέγγιση σε έναν αέναο μουσικό αυθορμητισμό και στην διακριτή πνευματικότητα που αφθονεί στην ιστορία και στις ρίζες της μαύρης μουσικής.
Ο Kahil El’Zabar γεννήθηκε το 1953 στο νότιο Chicago με το όνομα Clifton Blackburn. O Kahil πήγε στα κολλέγια Kennedy–King & MalcolmX City του Chicago για να καταλήξει σ’αυτό του Lake Forest. Toν τελευταίο χρόνο στο κολλέγιο όμως, μ’ ένα πρόγραμμα ανταλλαγής φοιτητών βρέθηκε στο πανεπιστήμιο της Ghana, όπου μελέτησε την Αφρικάνικη μουσική παράδοση και τις ρίζες της ..μαύρης μουσικής. Από μαθητής Γυμνασίου άλλωστε ήταν ήδη ανήσυχο μέλος της περίφημης ένωσης μουσικών AAMC (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) μέλη του οποίου ήταν οι Art Ensemble of Chicago, ο Henry Threadgill, η Amina Claudine Mayers, o Chico Freeman, η Dee Alexander και άλλα ιερά τέρατα της μουσικής της ευρύτερης περιοχής του Chicago. Διετέλεσε μάλιστα πρόεδρος της AACM στην ηλικία των 22 χρόνων του και για 8 χρόνια! Από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 70’ δημιούργησε τα δύο σχήματα με τα οποία κάνει για πάνω από 50 χρόνια μεγάλη καριέρα με μεγάλη δισκογραφία. Το Ethnic Heritage Ensemble & το Ritual Trio! Με περισσότερες από 30 ηχογραφήσεις με αυτόν ως leader ο Kahil, έχει βάλει την σφραγίδα του σε πάρα πολλούς εμβληματικούς δίσκους με τον David Murray, τον Archie Shepp, τους Lester & Josef Bowie, τον Joseph Jarman, τον Pharoah Sanders, τον Hamiet Bluiett ή τον Billy Bang ανάμεσα σε πολλούς άλλους!

One of the most creative and free personalities in the jazz world is coming to the Half Note Jazz Club. American master percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El’Zabar, along with his amazing band, celebrate more than 50 years of groundbreaking creativity, bringing four magical concert nights from October 18th to the 21st, the intimate stage of the historic venue. The top artist, who has accompanied bands like those of Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Nina Simone, and has been a valuable collaborator of Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, and David Murray, will take us on a journey of musical spontaneity and distinctive spirituality that thrives us through the history and roots of black music.
Kahil El’Zabar was born in 1953 in South Chicago under the name Clifton Blackburn. He attended Kennedy-King College & Malcolm X City College in Chicago, before transferring to Lake Forest College. During his final year of college, he participated in a student exchange program that took him to the University of Ghana, where he studied African music traditions and the roots of black music. Even during his high school years, Kahil was an active and restless member of the famous AAMC (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), whose members included the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Henry Threadgill, Amina Claudine Myers, Chico Freeman, Dee Alexander, and other giants of music from the greater Chicago area. He even served as the president of AACM at the young age of 22 years, a position he held for 8 years!
Since the mid-70s, he formed two groups with which he has built a successful career spanning over 50 years and a significant discography. The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble & The Ritual Trio. With more than 30 recordings as a bandleader, Kahil has left his mark on numerous iconic albums alongside artists such as David Murray, Archie Shepp, Lester & Josef Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Pharoah Sanders, Hamiet Bluiett, and Billy Bang, among many others!
Kahil El’Zabar’s music is addictive and wonderful, transcending boundaries and radiating deep spirituality. It flows beautifully, merging ancient African traditions with the modern world, featuring original compositions as well as well-known pieces with a completely different perspective and groove. Kahil El’Zabar plays percussion with every inch of his body, and his voice and the way he uses it, often evokes memories of the great Gil Scott-Heron!
For these concerts at Half Note Jazz Club, his musical companions will be some long –time collaborators such as the extraordinary Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Alex Harding on baritone saxophone, and Ishmael Ali on cello.
